Conservationists recently joined residents of Mandera County in pointing blame at Governor Ali Roba for preferring to camp in Nairobi, where he hosts campaign meetings in ‘air-conditioned high-end hotels’ at a time residents are faced with starvation following a prolonged drought period.

The conservationists accuse Mr Roba of doing little to address the dire famine situation. Mr Ali Roba has served his two terms as governor is described by many as among the worst-performing governors in the country.

He allegedly grabbed 600 acres of prime land in Mandera that belongs to the community. Residents are now demanding for an audit be conducted by the land registry in Mandera by the national government. Residents praise the national government for delivering famine relief food and water. “The governor instead of complementing the national government’s efforts and helping drought victims, is busy running around in Nairobi,” said the lobbyists.

He is said to have constructed palatial homes for his two wives on part of the land with round the clock security personnel backed up by CCTV cameras. He is also said to have grabbed huge parcels of land in other areas of Mandera town on which he has built multi-million-shilling bungalows and luxury villas. “He recently bused delegates from all corners of the vast Mandera County to Bomas of Kenya to launch his campaign as if Mandera is in Nairobi?” the lobbyists fumed saying millions of taxpayers’ money has been squandered on personal business.

Mr Roba chairs the Frontier County Development Council, counties that are now faced with famine over prolonged drought, he is however in Nairobi busy propping up the county speaker to succeed him. He is said to be eying the position of Senator in the August 9th elections while out to ensure the speaker who is a relative succeeds him as governor.

The self-serving governor is accused of turning a blind eye to the suffering of his people whose animals are dying from drought plunging many into widespread poverty. The Frontier County Development Council member counties are Wajir, Garissa, Isiolo, Marsabit, Turkana, Pokot and Mandera.
