The popular singer said the country had been mismanaged by politicians with “eye-sight”. He said the time had come for a blind man to become president
Veteran Kenya gospel singer Reuben Kigame is in the 2022 presidential race. Mr Kigame, 46, makes history as the first visually impaired presidential aspirant in Kenya and the East African region.
Talking on a local FM radio station, the popular singer said the country had been mismanaged by politicians with “eye-sight”. He said the time had come for a blind man to become president. He vowed to end graft if he succeeds Uhuru Kenyatta as president next year.
He accused other aspirants of peddling “lies” yet with their eyes scheming to “steal” public resources and “snatch” other people’s wives. Kigame said “temptation” begins from eyesight adding that as a blind person he is the “anti-dot” to end corruption driving the country to the dogs.
The last time a born-again Christian vied for the Kenya presidency was in 2013 when Pastor Puis Muiru of the Maximum Miracle Church threw his hat in the ring. Muiri claimed Kenya needed a “God-fearing” leader who would wake up at dawn to pray for the country not to “drink alcohol.”
The fiery preacher with a TV channel urged thousands of his faithful’s who had been turning out at Uhuru Park crusades to vote him as president. But the faithful’s refused to buy his gospel not ready to mix spiritual matters with politics.
To Muiru’s utter disbelief, the preacher who spent a fortune on campaigns suffered humiliating defeat coming last out of 11 contenders. The Muirus burnt their fingers and many now wonder what chances Mr Kigame can hope to have as a visually impaired aspirant with limited resources? Will Kenyans be fed up with a “cheating” political elite resolve to elect a blind man in 2022? Time will soon tell.
