Sonko is battling multi-million shilling graft cases lodged in 2019 by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Corruption (EACC) through 2020, which saw him blocked from accessing his Nairobi county offices. EACC detectives engaged Sonko in a high chase car drama as the governor appeared set to flee to neighbouring Tanzania through Taita Taveta.
