The residents of Kananachi village in Trans Nzoia County heaved a huge sigh of relief on Friday evening when former Rift Valley Regional Commissioner George Natembeya donated to them a 500 KVA transformer as part of his ‘’ Light up Trans Nzoia campaign.

The donation threw the village into a frenzy, it brought to an end the ever-continuous power outage, much to the relief of residents. Mr Natembeya said he will continue sourcing for transformers to be donated to all villages in the County to boost electricity supply in their localities.

He said the plight of the residents over rampant power outages had not been addressed for a long time and asked Kenya Power and Lighting Company to have all ageing transformers in the county replaced. In his pledge to the residents, Natembeya said he will ensure the autonomy of regulators and institutions responsible for service delivery and policy implementation are reinforced.

‘’We will also ensure reviews and adaptation of good governance structures are upheld in all areas and institutions in the water sector. We will work with all stakeholders to ensure we achieve water supply’’, he said. ‘’We will ensure the water company works independently without interference to ensure they thrive and provide services to wananchi’’, he added.

He said that completion of the Kiptogot~Kolongolo and Kapolet water projects will help ensure that residents of Trans-Nzoia get enough clean water. ‘’ We will also ensure the water systems put in place by the current regime are safely managed and reinforced, including maintenance of all water points, pipes, boreholes, dams and springs’’, he said.

Former ICT and special infrastructure secretary in the Deputy President’s office Maurice Kakai Bisau commended the former RC for the prompt response to the plight of the residents, saying that if the country’s electricity regulator, Kenya Power and lighting company fail to make the right investments, residents will continue wallowing in darkness

The transformer at Kananachi will see more than 2,000 residents connected to electricity. A resident, Martin Matara said the prompt manner in which the former regional commissioner responded to their plight was worthy of emulation by other leaders, adding that it was an eloquent testimony of servant leadership.  “This is very much unprecedented. I never believed that such a thing could happen especially when one is not in the office, we must all emulate George Natembeya for the donation which will boost electricity supply’’, he said.

Former ICT and special infrastructure secretary in the Deputy President’s office Maurice Kakai Bisau commended the former RC for the prompt response to the plight of the residents, saying that if the country’s electricity regulator, Kenya Power and lighting company fail to make the right investments, residents will continue wallowing in darkness.

Bisau who is in the race to replace Kiminini MP Chris Wamalwa said he would prioritize electricity supply to enable locals to venture into cottage industries. He said: “This is part of the Light Up Kiminini Project. I want the residents of Kiminini to understand that the project is not all about streetlights. The intention of Light Up Kananachi and other villages in Kiminini is to continue to intervene to facilitate the overall equation of delivering power to our people.

“It will be interesting to note that the former RC who is not in office has managed to drop this transformer here, he has succeeded where other leaders have failed’’, Kakai said, adding that he will work with likeminded people including professionals and donor agencies to give Kiminini Town a facelift.
