“My sister’s husband and son were waiting for her to arrive from Kitale. Sadly, she couldn’t make it “, said Caren Khaoya siter to Janet Khaoya Munyasia
Janet Khaoya Munyasia the wife to former MP for Sirisia John Munyasia is among the three people who lost their lives in a grisly road accident that occurred in Kiminini on Saturday night. Seven others were seriously injured in the fatal accident which occurred along the Kitale-Webuye Highway after a tractor pulling a water browser and a Nissan matatu collided. The driver of the tractor escaped after the 8 pm incident.
Police say he was driving an unregistered tractor pulling an unregistered water bowser full of water from the Kiminini trading centre heading towards Webuye town. Police said that the water bowser disengaged from the tractor while on the climbing lane, and speedily descended backwards colliding with the Nissan matatu registration number KDA 239B which was behind.
“As the tractor was going uphill, the screw which joined the bowser on the tractor stripped off – the bowser turned round and went downhill and the matatu on high speed which was going upwards had a head-on collision with the bowser,” said Mrs Jecinta Wesonga, Trans Nzoia County police Commander while confirming the incident.
The police boss said the matatu was extensively damaged as a result of the accident. She said the seven survivors who were rushed to Kitale County referral hospital are receiving treatment. She noted that the majority of the injured suffered leg, head and chest injuries.
According to the Police Commander, the fatal accident could have been avoided if the owner of the tractor had installed proper lights and proper mechanical maintenance. She called for proper and timely maintenance of tractors, noting that many accidents occur due to lack of maintenance.
She asked drivers to be sober and keen while on the road. “The accident could have been avoided had the matatu driver noticed the coming tractor “, she said. A sister to the late Janet the husband of the deceased and her son was waiting for her. “My sister’s husband and son were waiting for her to arrive from Kitale. Sadly, she couldn’t make it “, said Caren Khaoya. She said that her sister who normally drives herself decided not to drive and instead boarded a matatu to be able to arrive on time.
“Her husband tried to reach her on phone in vain only to later find her in a mortuary when he went to search for her body after learning of the accident “, she told The Weekly Vision www.theweeklyvision.net during an interview.
The deceased bodies were moved to Kitale Country hospital mortuary awaiting identification and autopsy. The vehicle and the tractor with bowser were towed to Kitale police station and detained pending inspection. The incident comes in the wake of another one where an irate crowd on Wednesday night set ablaze one of the campaign vehicles belonging to Kiminini MP Chris Wamalwa after the driver killed a woman and injured a child in an accident.
