While ODM party’s top hierarchy seem to be leaning towards outspoken women representative Gladys Wanga, many are warning that she could be whitewashed by “Mr Money bags “Evans Kidero in the primaries

He is arguably one of Kenya’s wealthiest politicians having amassed a colossal fortune after stints in both the private and public sectors. Evans Kidero is the man with the “Midas touch” who has held top jobs at a multi-national pharmaceutical firm Smith Kline Beecham, Nation Media, and Mumias sugar factory.

He has amassed a vast fortune many of his peers will die only dreaming about! He owns princely properties like multi-storied high rise businesses buildings in the Upper hill area of Nairobi and five-star hotels on Kenya’s coast. Evans Kidero also served for one term as the governor of Nairobi County before he was controversially drooped by ‘voters’; he is a shrewd and quiet operator who speaks very little.

Kidero lost to Mike Sonko in the 2017 election and later retreated quietly to conduct his business but has been a frequent “guest of the state” over corruption charges. In one court appearance he was charged with his son but he “smiled” his way out of remand jail posting hefty bail terms.

The usually composed man is said to operate 13 bank accounts and is facing graft charges by EACC, he appears unmoved by the cases. His top aides say the law is clear “you are innocent until proved guilty” which has not yet happened as the cases drag on in courts

While ODM seems to be leaning towards outspoken women representative Gladys Wanga for the Homa Bay governor, many are warning she could be whitewashed by “Mr Money bags “Evans Kidero! The usually composed man is said to operate 13 bank accounts and is facing graft charges by EACC, he appears unmoved by the cases. His top aides say the law is clear “you are innocent until proved guilty” which has not yet happened as the cases drag on in courts.

Homa Bay women representative Gladys Wanga

In 2016 Kidero slapped Rachel Shebesh outside his office as she led county women workers in protesting against delayed salaries. In what later came to be dubbed as one of the world’s “most expensive slaps”, Kidero is reported to have forked out Ksh. 5 million to silence the vocal women rep from filing assault charges in court. Kidero denies this but Shebesh conceded she was paid the amount to “hold her peace.”

Homa Bay could present ODM leader Raila Odinga with one of his worst nightmares, from choosing Ms Wanga, an outspoken foot soldier and party firebrand, to a major party financier in Kidero. It could well end in the typical fashion of “he who pays the piper calls the tune!”
