Dry taps: A living nightmare for city residents

It is common for one to come across dry water taps in Nairobi

Residents of Nairobi are bitter over the scarcity of water in their homes. People here are damned when it rains and dams burst their banks and are even more damned when there is prolonged sunshine when water levels in the dams recede.

Many people wonder why for more than 20 years, the city has been reduced to a “semi-arid region” with chronic water shortages even when heavy rains cause heavy floodings and burst the Ndakaine dam in Murang’a county from where much of the water used in Nairobi is sourced from.

City residents are challenging Nairobi Metropolitan Service (NMS) asking that they dismantle water cartels that operate water browsers so as to ensure there is sufficient water for residents

Ironically while residents go without water and are forced to spend a fortune on the basic item, huge trucks labelled “fresh drinking water” ply various estates selling water, where do they get the water from? In some city suburbs, residents have one day off from their duties, just for reserved “water”, spending the night stocking up on the precious item from one watering hole that dries up after 12 hours.

Many young people in Nairobi have never seen water flow from their taps. Water in most suburbs has remained elusive. Now angry residents bitter with the unending scarcity of the most basic commodity anywhere in the world are challenging the government to ensure a regular flow of clean and safe water.
