A demand by a Mombasa preacher for a Ksh. 50 offering a person at each service has kicked up a storm, disrupting last Sunday’s church service. Pastor Philip Wanjala was preaching on the virtue of “giving” in the church to earn “divine” blessings. He accused some faithful of being “misers” who give to “Gods” work “silver coins.

The preacher then declared that from henceforth there would be no “silver coins” and the “minimum” offering would be Ksh. 50! But a visibly incensed congregation would hear none of it! Several speakers told off the pastor saying offering was voluntary and a personal choice.

Pastor Philip Wanjala of the Philip Ministries International refused to budge saying this would be the “law” going forward

The preacher had failed to appreciate that his Mshomoroni based church in Mombasa is basically for “hustlers” living from hand to mouth. The angry congregation said the “scriptures’ were clear on tithes and offerings. They said it was wrong to dictate what worshipers should give as offerings or tithes.

But Pastor Philip Wanjala of the Philip Ministries International refused to budge saying this would be the “law” going forward! Several worshipers then took to the podium and wrestled down the deacons trying to protect the pastor..The preacher took to his heels with a hostile mob in hot pursuit. The preacher has been banned from the church as the congregation said they would “appoint” another “shepherd”! Wanjala was accused of only being after “their money.

Speaking to The Weekly Vision on the issue NGO council of Kenya has urged church leaders to stop putting “material wealth” ahead of their “divine calling.” Council chairman Stephen Cheboi said some “wolves” in “sheepskin” were spoiling the name of the church in pursuit of material wealth.

Cheboi said some of his members had complained of churches who even keep payslips of worshipers and demand money which he said amounted to “extortion.”
