Deputy President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza Alliance has moved into desperation mode over the women’s vote. The Alliance is fighting for the decisive women’s vote against Raila Odinga’s Azimio as the country heads into the final days before the August 2022 general elections.

With the nomination of seasoned politician Martha Karua as Raila’s number two against Ruto’s political novice in Rigathi Gachagua, the stakes for the women’s vote among the two leading presidential candidates catapulted to staggering levels.

According to political analysts, it is an open secret that these developments have since seen opinion polls swing in favour of DP Ruto’s closest competitor Raila Odinga who has surged ahead of him in dramatic fashion. The latest polls conducted by Infotrack put Raila Odinga ahead, he leads with a 44 percentage point against Ruto’s 38 per cent, just two months to go to the decisive polling day on August 9th.

The hastily crafted convention at Nyayo Stadium labelled Kenya Kwanza Women’s Charter conference last week was a clear indication that things were not going well in the outfit as far as women’s support is concerned. “Such a request has never happened before in any general election, but because Ruto’s handlers demanded it, first it shows they were following express orders from their boss and secondly sending a clear message their boss desperately wants the women’s vote to try and reverse his dwindling fortunes,” said a retired veteran media professional analytical writer.

Media outlets that were advised to send only women journalists to cover the event are the Nation Media Group, the Standard Group, the Royal Media Services, Mediamax Ltd and the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation among others.

Indeed the Kwanza Kenya Women’s Conference is widely seen as a desperate move by the Deputy President to counter fresh challenges posed by the picking of Martha Karua as Raila Odinga’s DP, the move by Ruto appeared to have backfired.
