DP William Ruto’s 5-hour shocker at Wilson airport

Deputy President William Ruto

The State now claims trip cancelled over security concerns

By The Weekly Vision

It was the ultimate humiliation of deputy president William Ruto. “You can’t go, won’t go, until cleared”, was the bone-chilling snub deputy president William Ruto stared stark in the face on Monday afternoon when his scheduled trip to Uganda was cancelled allegedly over his safety.

Not even at the worst of times did founding president Jomo Kenyatta, Uhuru’s dad, ever block his once-close ally turned foe, first vice president Jaramogi Odinga, Raila’s dad. Jomo and Jaramogi fell out in 1966 setting the stage for a bitter political feud that raged over the decades between their two communities- Kikuyu- Luo.

For many discerning political watchers, this humiliation was long coming! DP, they say, appears to be clinging to an “empty shell”! Almost all state powers have been transferred from his office to ministers and senior civil servants. Ruto had told off several senior civil servants at the airport that he did not need “clearance” from anybody apart from the president. But President Uhuru Kenyatta who has been on a state visit to the UK flew back quietly and maintained a studious silence as the drama involving his deputy played out.

“He was headed to Uganda for a private visit,” Ruto’s spokesperson David Mugonyi told The Weekly Vision on phone. DP’s entourage included MPs Oscar Sudi (Kapseret), Benjamin Tayari (Kinango) and Ndindi Nyoro (Kiharu), they were the first to arrive at the airport

Ruto was making his second private visit to Uganda in less than 3 weeks for an alleged business meeting with investors. He was accompanied by a Turkish “gun” merchant accused of being an international sponsor of terrorism. Turkish national Harun Aydin is said to be on the watch list of the FBI as a major sponsor of terror activities.

But Ruto aides claim Harun is a Turkish investor interested in modern fruit farming. Reports from his Harambee House Annex office indicated the DP was travelling to Uganda on a one-day private visit to honour an invitation by some unnamed business moguls. He was to be accompanied by a team of politicians and business people.

“He was headed to Uganda for a private visit,” Ruto’s spokesperson David Mugonyi told The Weekly Vision on phone. DP’s entourage included MPs Oscar Sudi (Kapseret), Benjamin Tayari (Kinango) and Ndindi Nyoro (Kiharu), they were the first to arrive at the airport.

They were blocked by Immigration officers and asked to seek clearance from National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi. This they did in time to fly on to Kampala leaving Kenya’s deputy president of 9 years gnashing teeth.

The blockade imposed on deputy president William Ruto only draws a parallel with the house arrest Jaramogi faced several times. Both during Kenyatta senior and later Daniel Moi. Others like Prof. George Saitoti, Mwai Kibaki, and Josephat Karanja who was impeached by parliament in 1989, did not face such humiliation.

At no time did Jaramogi try to board a plane and then blocked it at the airport the way it has happened to Kenya’s 8th deputy president Ruto. In Kampala, it is reggae maestro populist presidential aspirant in 2021 elections Bobi Wine who has suffered worse state harassment.

This is at the hands of President Yoweri Museveni, Ruto’s political confidante. Museveni, a former guerrilla fighter, has ruled the landlocked country for 36 years. For 5 hours a furious Dr Ruto found himself completely “hopeless” as he was unable to board a plane for Kampala to attend a scheduled business meeting.
