“As I stand here before you I want to assure Kenyans that when I form the next government I will appoint 50% women and 50% men into my cabinet to bring the gender equality in my leadership.”-DP William Ruto
Deputy President William Ruto, the UDA party and Kenya Kwanza Presidential flag bearer has declared that should he win the presidency in August his cabinet will consist of 50 per cent women, but will he fulfill the promise?
The move by Ruto is meant to counter his main competitor, Azimio Presidential flag bearer Raila Odinga picking a woman as his running mate and possibly Kenta’s 1st ever woman Deputy President Martha Karua if they win the Presidency in August.
At one of his campaign rallies recently DP was heard saying that he will form a cabinet composed of 50% women but that declaration was not reflected in the list his party UDA presented to the Registrar of Political Parties, it simply means that he may never honour the promise if elected president. On the list presented to the register of political parties by Kenya Kwanza, the Amani National Congress (ANC) party leader Musalia Mudavadi is proposed as the next Chief Cabinet Secretary or Prime Minister should they win the presidency.
DP Ruto declared: “As I stand here before you I want to assure Kenyans that when I form the next government I will appoint 50% women and 50% men into my cabinet to bring the gender equality in my leadership.” He said that although his main competitor for the seat Raila Odinga has settled for seasoned politician and NARC Kenya leader Karua as his running mate that was of no consequence to the Kenya Kwanza Alliance.
That his administration will tackle once and for all the gender issue that has been pending in parliament since the promulgation of the new constitution adding that President Uhuru Kenyatta completely failed to deal with the issue thus creating a constitutional vacuum that demands gender parity in all elective and public appointment. Interestingly Mr Ruto conveniently forgot that before Martha Karua secured the DP nominee, she went through a process that some say was hotly contested having attracted a list of ten aspirants both men and women that eventually saw her coming out tops.
As DP Ruto made his roadside declarations, Mr Odinga on the other hand held campaign rallies introducing Martha Karua to the public. The DP’s team at one time issued disparaging remarks to the effect that as “a woman Martha Karua cannot do anything positive for the country”
On the other hand, Kenya Kwanza only two names bandied around, that of Senator Kithure Kindiki and MP Nderitu Gachagua who eventually secured the DP nominee position. Senator Kithuri lost out after he allegedly leaked secret information to Musalia Mudavadi about the next government formation before it was made public, Musalia then leaked information to one of his contacts at one of the local daily newspapers.
As DP Ruto made his roadside declarations, Mr Odinga on the other hand held campaign rallies introducing Martha Karua to the public. The DP’s team at one time issued disparaging remarks to the effect that as “a woman Martha Karua cannot do anything positive for the country”. They conveniently forgot the central she played in the second liberation.
Martha Karua played a central role in the removal of Section 2(a) from the constitution, the move saw the country adopt the multi-party democratic process whose first election was held in 1992 when DP Ruto was still a youth winger for the KANU party in the defunct Youth for Kanu 1992 (YK ’92).
