Deputy President William Ruto is facing unprecedented internal rebellion from within his political vehicle, the Kenya Kwanza Alliance. The rebellion is being spearheaded by Kiambu County aspirants for Governor William Kabogo and Moses Kuria, it threatens to derail the DP’s quest for the Presidency in this year’s elections.

The rebellion, according to internal sources within Kenya Kwanza has been brewing for months now and DP Ruto failed to diffuse the volatile and highly dangerous situation in time. The exploding rebellion is mostly against DP nominee Rigathi Gachagua in a region of the country with the leading number of registered voters. The rebellion is happening at the most critical stage in the campaigns when his brigade is supposed to work like a well-oiled machine, impregnable, unified and synchronized otherwise if left unattended to, the issues will cost him his ten-year quest for the country’s presidency and consign him into to oblivion.

Apart from Central, another volatile region DP Ruto needs to work on is Western Kenya, leading political leaders in Kenya Kwanza from the region Musalia Mudavadi of ANC party and Moses Wetangula of Ford Kenya party have publicly and openly complained that they will not accept the fielding of UDA candidates in any constituency in the former Western Province be they Senatorial, National Assembly, Gubernatorial or Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) seats.

Just twelve months ago, you would not have witnessed the kind of headlines now dominating some of Kenya’s national media outlets, “Kenya: Rebellion Hits DP Ruto Camp’’ or “Ruto Faces Rebellion in Mt. Kenya.’’

A former cabinet minister and Nambale constituency legislator elder Phillip Masinde was heard saying, “In his home counties of Rift Valley, DP Ruto only enjoys questionable support in the north rift particularly Uasin Gishu County where just last weekend Azimio Alliance’s DP nominee Martha Karua received a heroine’s welcome and support.” Elder Masinde warned that any rebellion in Mt. Kenya where his running mates Rigathi Gachagua hail from will be damaging. Mr Gachagua’s arrogance, chest-thumping, bravado and impunity have done little to endear his team to voters in the region.

According to political analysts, this is a dangerous trend for Ruto in the final stage of the general electioneering process. Instead, his biggest challenger, Azimio’s Presidential candidate Raila Odinga is now being considered the favourite Presidential candidate in a region that only a few weeks ago was considered DP Ruto’s stronghold.

Kenya with his key lieutenants on the ground Moses Kuria and William Kabogo reportedly boycotting Mr. Gachagua’s political rallies in the region.
