President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration has been faulted for doing nothing to protect the four million vulnerable Kenyans staring at hunger in drought-stricken regions in the north of the country. Reports from international agencies paint a bleak picture of the arid and semi-arid regions of Kenya.
The reports indicate that up to 11 children have already starved to death in Marsabit County as many others battle hunger in Samburu, Pokot, and Turkana. Marsabit is the home county of Kenya’s finance CS Ukur Yattani! Kenya Kwanza coalition co-principal and ANC party leader Musalia Mudavadi accused President Kenyatta of failing to serve Kenyans in his final months in power. Mr Mudavadi urged the President to stop the “obsession” with campaigning for Azimio la Umoja presidential candidate Raila Odinga and serve Kenyans who elected him. “You were not elected by Mr Odinga in 2017” fumed Mudavadi.
Mudavadi said the unfortunate attack on Raila Odinga’s helicopter in Uasin Gishu was nothing new as others had suffered the same fate. “The president never spoke out when goons attacked deputy president William Ruto and businessman Jimmy Wanjigi. Why is he then saying attacking Mr Odinga would burn the country, are others lesser mortals? He was supported by his FORD Kenya co-principal Moses Wetangula who accused the head of state of keeping a loud silence on the famine situation worsening with each passing day. “Even after children starve to death he says nothing” fumed Wetangula.
In Isiolo, Turkana, Pokot, Samburu, Mwingi, Kitui, and parts of Tharaka Nithi, millions are staring at starvation while politicians crisscross the country campaigning, promising “manna from heaven” if elected
In Isiolo, Turkana, Pokot, Samburu, Mwingi, Kitui, and parts of Tharaka Nithi, millions are staring at starvation while politicians crisscross the country campaigning! As they keep promising “manna from heaven” if elected they have turned a blind eye to the harsh reality of failed rains triggering widespread hunger. Donor agencies are also questioning the work of county governments that run parallel cabinets in 47 regions. “How come they did not anticipate the situation and roll out mitigation measures with the budget they hold from the national government.”
The Red Cross, Oxfam and World Vision officials are warning that unless the national government commits resources to battle famine, many lives could be lost as already livestock is dying per minute for lack of pasture and water.
Donor agencies have accused Kenyan county governments of blowing millions on grandiose projects and failing to monitor, anticipate and intervene in the drought situation in the north, northeast, eastern and parts of central Kenya.
