More than 5,000 residents of Trans Nzoia County have all the reason to smile after they were issued title deeds to their pieces of land in a National Titling Programme that kicked off Sunday.

The programme was launched in Kiminini Sub County by Defense Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa and witnessed by the former Rift Valley Regional Commissioner George Natembea, Trans Nzoia County Assembly Speaker Joshua Werunga and County Commissioner Samson Ojwang’.

The programme is geared toward addressing the lack of title deeds in the region with statistics indicating that more than 85% of the residents lack land ownership documents giving room to land-related feuds among families and their neighbours.

Former Rift Valley Regional Commissioner George Natembeya issues a resident of Muthangari with a title deed.

“Trans Nzoia has been greatly affected with the lack of land title deeds with the majority of the farms which were initially owned by white settlers lacking documentation,” said Mr Wamalwa at Tutwelt in Waitaluk location. Mr Natembeya who is eyeing the county’s Governorship position said ownership of the land title deeds will be instrumental in aiding land owners to have legal rights which include securing bank loans to finance their projects.

“This process has been made possible courtesy of President Uhuru Kenyatta. We hope that this will reduce cases of land-related squabbles,” – Trans Nzoia County Commissioner Samson Ojwang’

“If I am elected governor, I will prioritize reforms in the lands sector since it has been the major contributing factor to the high poverty index in this region,” he said. Commissioner Ojwang exuded confidence that the issuance of the deeds will aid chiefs and courts of law in finding solutions to land-related feuds which are on a high scale in the region.

“This process has been made possible courtesy of President Uhuru Kenyatta. We hope that this will reduce cases of land-related squabbles,” said Mr Ojwang’. The issuance of the deeds began at Weonia, Mufutu, Waitaluk, Muthangari and Shimo la Tewa.

Senatorial candidate Joshua Werunga, Kimimini parliamentary candidate Kakai Wa Bisau and woman representative candidate Phanice Khatundi lashed out at Ford Kenya leaders over alleged poor leadership calling on residents to reject its candidates at the ballot.

Mr Wamalwa lauded President Kenyatta’s government for prioritizing the issuance of 6 million title deeds. The CS will lead similar exercises in Bungoma, Busia and West Pokot counties in the coming days.
