Kenya’s highways continue to wreak havoc claiming motorists lives at a rate far more than the Covid -19 pandemic. The latest horrific road carnage was witnessed Thursday, July 8 in the morning after a speeding matatu collided head-on with a lorry killing five people on the spot along the accident-prone Nairobi-Nakuru highway.
Kenyan roads have been described by international road safety experts as some of the deadliest to drive on. Since the start of 2021, many commuters have been driven into untimely graves on the Nyeri-Nyahururu-Muranga, and Isiolo roads all largely preventable accidents.
Pressure is mounting on the government to focus more energy and resources towards fighting road accidents just like it is doing with Covid 19 whose risk factor is well known
According to the latest data from the National Road Safety Agency, more than 3,000 Kenyans have died this year alone in road accidents, so far this July Road accidents have claiming upwards of 700 in just 8 days.
The road accident “positivity” rate outstrips Covid- 19 by far as most Covid-19 infected people can go on to recover while road accidents present a “zero-sum” option of survival, many stakeholders keep pointing out.

Several concerned passengers interviewed by The Weekly Vision blamed laxity by traffic officers and thirst for bribes for the increasing fatal road accidents. People are demanding the introduction of Michuki rules and are challenging transport minister James Macharia to “stop sleeping on the job”. CS “Macahari should emulate his predecessor the late John Michuki who had streamlined the matatu industry,” many alarmed commuters told The Weekly Vision saying alcohol blow and speed governors should be re-introduced to stop the senseless road carnage.
