Co-operative Bank of Kenya group CEO and MD Dr Gideon Muriuki has landed top honours once again after being picked as the best bank CEO this year. According to African Banking Awards organised by EMEA Finance, Dr Muriuki is the best CEO this year. The man who joined the bank as a senior manager two decades ago has risen through the ranks defying wide-ranging odds.

When he took the helm in 2001, the bank was drifting into stormy waters making colossal losses. Matters were worsened by the 1998 terror bomb blast that targeted the US embassy next to the bank. Matters further came to a head in the millennium rollover of 1999-2000 with the bank unable to post a profit during the tenure of Erastus Mureithi.

The experienced banker was recognised for implementing key strategies to address challenges facing both businesses and households amid the COVID-19 pandemic. During the period under review, it was noted the CEO opted to retain staff despite the economic shocks associated with the pandemic
