Retired Chief Justice Dr Willy Mutunga and former anti-corruption czar John Githongo have backed calls made by deputy president William Ruto asking President Uhuru Kenyatta to refund the billions of shillings spent on the failed BBI process.

The two through their Twitter accounts said that the head of state had driven the economy to its knees by protecting corrupt cartels who are engaged in state plunder. President Kenyatta with the initial BBI report

They said to make matters worse President Kenyatta had dragged the country into huge external debts. President Kenyatta they said had gone on to burn Ksh. 9 billion shillings on the ill-fated attempt to amend the 2010 constitution so he “could succeed himself like Russia’s Vladimir Putin”!

With only 3 months to the end of his second and last term, there can be little doubt that all is not going well for Kenya’s 4th president. A hostile deputy backed by defiant judges has virtually turned Uhuru Kenyatta into a lame-duck president who is now even being heckled by crowds in his political home turf! Things can’t get worse than that, can they?

DP Ruto was early in the week breathing fire, accusing his boss of burning the country’s scarce resources on a bogus non-priority bid to amend the constitution to “share power with his cronies.” The DP’s salvo backed by civil society groups, and Kenya’s fiercely independent judiciary has sent cold shivers down the spine of the soon-to-retire president.

Judges of the court of appeal while throwing out the BBI bill in 2021 warned that “Mr Kenyatta” could be prosecuted after he leaves power in August for abuse of office like South Africa’s Jacob Zuma. Mr Zuma is currently serving a prison sentence for corruption. The defiant judges have further warned that the “Kenyatta’s” could also be held liable for the huge external debt now standing at a staggering Ksh. 9 Trillion!
