Union of Kenya Civil Servants (UKCS) Secretary-General Tom Odege appears set to retain his position after his main rivals, deputy Ole Kina and National Treasury Justus Mugo threw in the towel!

Odege said he still enjoys the wide support of civil servants since he was elected into the office 5 years ago in Mombasa. He added that he would not be surprised if his challengers “threw in the towel!”

Sources who spoke to The Weekly Vision further divulged that Ole Kina had also held long discussions with Odege saying he “might step down” in his favour

Mugo is Odege’s main challenger but appears to be developing cold feet and has reportedly been seen at Odege’s office “negotiating to step down”

Sources who spoke to The Weekly Vision further divulged that Ole Kina had also held long discussions with Odege saying he “might step down” in his favour.

Mugo critics have accused him of failing to manage union resources as he lacks professional competence!” Odege is also Nyatike MP and has has won praise from civil servants for crusading and securing medical insurance cover for all cadres. He had also helped improve over time and risk allowance paid to civil servants in hardship areas, including promotions.

Odege supporters further dismiss claims that up to 150,000 civil servants would be retrenched in accordance with IMF demands for structural adjustment, to reduce the bloated wage bill. Discussions are on-going with the employer on “merited job rationalization” they say adding that early retirement is not “mass sacking.”
