The giant multi-billion shillings Afya Savings and Credit Cooperative (Sacco) society last ending year made history in the country by being the first billionaire Sacco in the country’s cooperative movement to elect a woman as its national chairman.

Ms Beatrice Mogire was picked to that powerful position soon after the Sacco held its Annual 2021 Delegates Conference (ADC) at the Safari Park Hotel on Thika Super Highway, the conference was graced by the immediate former Commissioner of Cooperatives Geoffrey Ndjang’ombe who was the Chief Guest.

It is expected that this year under her leadership and that of (CEO) Felix Ndoi that amount and value is expected to soar beyond the Kshs. 20 billion-plus, a mark that may push it closer to becoming one of the country’s top three billiona shillings Saccos

Ms Mogire has risen through the ranks from being a member of the Afya Sacco’s Central Management Committee (CMC) to being the national Vice Chairman of the Sacco and the National Chairman. The previous year 2020 which could have most likely seen her capture that seat, the Sacco did not hold its ritual annual ADC because of the government’s stringent conditions to curb the spread of the deadly Covid-19 pandemic.

Madam Mogire joined the Sacco as an ordinary member, she then chose to try her chances in the cooperative movement’s elective politics which eventually saw her becoming a member of the Afya Sacco CMC. It’s from there that she become the national chairman of the country’s 5th billion shillings Sacco with assets and savings valued at more than Khs. 19 billion as at the last ADC and still growing.

It is expected that this year under her leadership and (CEO) Felix Ndoi that amount and value is expected to soar beyond the Kshs. 20 billion-plus, a mark that may push it closer to becoming one of the country’s top three billionaire Saccos.

When the top five billionaire savings and credit co-operative societies (Saccos) were declared by the country’s cooperative movement government leadership in 2019, they were among the country’s top lenders after accumulating savings and assets worth more than Shs.149.9 billion as at the end of that year’s previous financial year – Madam Mogire was deeply involved in the achievements, as a national leader in the wings of the country’s cooperative movement.

They are led by another top billionaire giant Mwalimu Sacco whose members are largely high school and secondary school teachers under the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and the ministry of education, followed by Harambee Sacco dominated by members working in the powerful ministry of the Office of the President and defence.

These are followed by Stima Sacco whose members are largely from the ministry of energy and affiliated state corporations like Kenya Power and Lighting Corporation (KPLC), Ken-Gen among others, followed by the Kenya Police Sacco whose membership is mainly drawn employees of the Kenya Police Service Commission (KPSC) and Afya whose members are mainly from the ministry of health and affiliated state corporations. It is worth noting that these historic top five billionaire Sacco announcements were made during Afya Sacco’s 2019 ADC at which Madam Mogire was present.

Speaking during Afya Sacco’s annual delegates conference that year at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), Ms Dolphine Aremo, the Director Cooperatives, Trade and Tourism Nairobi County, said the SACCOs had accumulated vast wealth over the years.
