Kenya Civil Servants Union Secretary General, Tom Odege

By The Weekly Vision Team

A fierce battle has erupted at the Union of Kenya Civil Servants (UKCS) pitting secretary general Tom Odege, his deputy Ole Kina and National Treasury Justus Mugo.

The hotly contested polls last held 5 years ago in Mombasa are expected to be held at an AGM on June 22 2021 in Nairobi. Mugo is Odege’s main challenger but was a close ally in the last polls.

Mugo’s critics have accused him of spending too much time on his private matatu business at the expense of union affairs. They questioned Mugo’s ‘poor resource management skills’ calling an audit of his professional competence!”

Tom Odege’s supporters dismiss his opponents as “thankless hypocrites” who are biting the hand that fed them!

Mr Odege’s supporters dismiss his opponents as “thankless hypocrites” who are biting the hand that fed them! Supporters say the union under Odege who is also Nyatike MP, had secured medical insurance cover for all cadres, increased over time and risk allowance paid to civil servants in hardship areas. Promotions they say are on course and had not stagnated.

Odege supporters further dismiss claims that up to 150,000 civil servants would be retrenched following IMF demands for structural adjustment, to reduce the bloated wage bill. Discussions are ongoing with the employer on “merited job rationalization” they say adding that early retirement is not “mass sacking.”

Odege supporters say Mugo’s claim that he would block the massive retrenchment of civil servants was “baseless and un-merited” adding that his “pesa mashinani” was a borrowed slogan from the council of county governors!

“Why is Mugo claiming that civil servants have been neglected and are earning meagre salaries while working in poor conditions” yet he is the national treasury drawing monthly pay! Odege backed civil servants remarked adding that Kenya civil servants are among the best paid in Africa affording rental or owned decent homes and cars via mortgage negotiated by his union.
