Residents of Nangoma Village where Senator Amos Wako hail from, are up in arms after he flexed his political muscle within government and forcefully acquired 150 acres of land from his economically marginalised neighbours.

The Senator and his brothers intend to use the expensive land to erect an ultra-modern private technical college which will then be named after his father, the late Dr Daniel Wako, sources say. The Senator who always seems to be smiling in public is a highly intelligent man but ruthless, he’s also a billionaire, who neighbours say has failed to use his wealth to elevate anybody outside of his close family members. The Senator wields immense power both within and out of government including at the international level. He survived two powerful turbulent regimes for decades without a scratch to show.

Mr Wako is also said to be a man who has no respect nor regard for other professions apart from lawyers like him, his disdain for journalists or the media is legendary, only tolerating them if they are of any use, like furthering his personal and political interests

He has been elected twice into office as Senator, served as AG under the late President Daniel Arap Moi’s and retired President Mwai Kibaki’s two terms in office but has nothing to show, especially among the people of Busia County. He is also said to be a man who has no respect nor regard for other professions apart from lawyers like him, his disdain for journalists or the media is legendary, only tolerating them if they are of any use, like furthering his personal and political interests. A veteran media personality said: “This is a fearful monster of a man who threatens the media fraternity with criminal libel to protect his interests from being probed or exposed, yet it is a well-known fact that he owns substantive shares in a leading media house.”

Despite Wako’s national and international stature, his massive wealth, and now Senator, he has done nothing for the people of Busia County. According to one of the Senator’s neighbours in Nang’oma village

At his Nang’oma rural home, residents say that he has failed to influence the tarmacking of a five-kilometre stretch of the road from Matayos market on the Busia – Kisumu highway to his palatial home at the feet of Nang’oma hills. They say at least former Vice President Moody Awori who hails from the neighbouring Funyula sub-county made a difference when he influenced the tarmacking of the Mumias – Bumala – Funyula to Port Victoria highway and ensured the tarmacking of an offshoot pathway to his home, just after Funyula market. The electrification of the Busia – Nambale – Mungatsi – Buyofu market. The former cabinet minister is also reputed to have played a leading role in the electrification of major town centres and their neighbourhoods like Nambale, Mungatsi, Buyofu, Butula and many others.

Despite Wako’s national and international stature, his massive wealth, and now Senator, he has done nothing for the people of Busia County. According to one of the Senator’s neighbours in Nang’oma village, the billionaire Senator has done nothing for the sub-county and county. “The Senator drives around in huge limousines, blowing dusty storms on us, yet as a representative, he has failed to provide us with piped water, yet the biggest government water production station is less than two kilometres away on River Sio. He and his siblings are contented in their protected, secure fully air-conditioned mansions.”

“The former Labour Minister Phillip Masinde during his two terms as Nambale constituency Member of Parliament achieved far more than senator Wako has ever achieved, especially the financing construction of classrooms at local schools and education of children from poor families.”

“The current Busia County headquarters, formerly the Municipal Council of Busia was constructed under Masinde’s influence as area MP. He also helped create constituencies for us away from the Marachi people who had dominated us as representatives in the National Assembly, he gave us Nambale. One of Senator Wako’s biggest problems is that trusts nobody apart from his immediate family members particularly his brother Charles Wako a former official with the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) who now manages his County and Nairobi Senate offices as if there are no other people from the county who can do the job.

A leading business leader in Busia town from North Teso Linus Ochakora said: “Wako is a big let-down to residents of Busia County. It is laughable for a man of his stature, education and experience to hire semi-illiterate conmen from his clan as a personal assistant when there are thousands of highly qualified professionals desperately looking for jobs.”

Mr Ochakora and other leaders from Butula, Teso South, Funyula, Budalangi, Nambale and even his Matayos sub-counties challenged the Senator to publicly declare how many people from the county he has personally assisted to get jobs or financed to further their education, there’s none.

An influential leader from Budalang’i George Khulohoma said: “We are talking about a man who got his job as Attorney General of Kenya under the late President Moi through the influence of former labour minister Mr Masinde. Mr Masinde also assisted the late Martin Kunguru to become the first and only Managing Trustee of the National Security Fund (NSSF) from Busia County, Mr Peter Kubebea as NSSF finance manager and many others, what has billionaire Wako done?” “It is an open secret that even as an appointed and elected public officer accessing Senator Wako is like trying to breach layers molten steel, yet he is supposedly a public servant elected to serve people from all walks of life. How can you effectively be of service to the people when they can’t access you?” posed Julius Khabala from Funyula sub-county.

He said that the worst aspect of the Senator’s character is that he is a highly vindictive man who never forgives nor forget what he considers a wrong or slight to him or his interests – “He will black list you and that is the end of the story, just ask Governor Ojaamon’g, he will fill you in a deeper story over his personal experience with the man.” Mr Khabala pointed out that despite the Senator’s billions, crowned with his national and international influence and shielded by an enormous power, there are no investments to date in Busia County that he has invested in.

He said Senator Wako has enormous skeletons to hide in his private closets that are in a way exposed by his obsession for secrecy, from the neighbouring Funyula constituency, Matayos to Ukambani. Now after Busia residents experience with the outgoing Busia County Governor Sospeter Ojaamong, Wako wants to take that job as one of his retirement packages after irreparably falling out with Ojaamong, a man he spent millions of shillings to campaign for as he sat enjoying his whisky in 2013 general elections.

A retired Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) leader, once one of his think tanks George Wesonga from Butula sub-county Posed: “What kind of development is Wako going to bring to this county after failing to do anything substantive right from his village as evidenced by the road from his Matayos village market to his Nang’oma village home?”
