Afya Sacco Staff Plan a Major Strike Over Salary Dispute

Afya Centre

Trouble is between the Sacco’s Central Management Committee (CMC) led by national chairperson Beatrice Mogire against the society’s 700 plus employees, the hardest hit being those holding positions below the managerial level, the issue threatens Afya Sacco’s very survival

Trouble is looming at Afya Cooperative Savings and Credit Cooperative (Sacco) Society with employees threatening to go on strike as a result of disputes with the board for failing to approve their salary increment.

The matter threatens to explode into massive industrial action and threatens the very existence of the giant organization.

The situation at the Sacco is very bad and is not helped by reported relentless mass withdrawals of savings by members; some of them taking out their savings for fear that their savings could be gobbled up when the organization eventually collapses, as I will soon. More than Khs. 21 billion in accumulated savings and assets is at stake in the exploding mess.

Workers have been advised by the arrogant Ms Mogire and the CMC that they will have to wait for six years before any pay rise is considered, alternatively the employees have been told that they face mass sackings to be replaced with new employees on a lower salary scale

Trouble is between the Sacco’s Central Management Committee (CMC) led by national chairperson Beatrice Mogire against the society’s 700 plus employees, the hardest hit being those holding positions below the managerial level, the issue threatens Afya Sacco’s very survival.

Beatrice Mogire

The failure by the CMC to credit workers with a deserved pay hike as stipulated in their Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) is a major issue. Instead, workers have been advised by the arrogant Ms Mogire and the CMC that they will have to wait for six years before any pay rise is considered, alternatively the employees have been told that they face mass sackings to be replaced with new employees on a lower salary scale. That is the reason why workers have threatened to go on strike unless their demand is met immediately.

Chief Executive Officer Peter Gisemba

Insider sources at Sacco who cannot be named because of the sensitivity of the matter and the fear for their jobs said: “The situation is extremely bad, “even the Chief Executive Officer Peter Gisemba has not been spared the mess. They can’t let him manage and make management decisions to run the Sacco, for more than a year the CMC under Ms Mogire has failed to confirm him in the position because of personal greed. They misuse Gisemba to pander to their wild and reckless greedy whims, they want to eat.” From top fairly well-paid managers to low cadre low paid junior employees, morale and motivation among  them is at their lowest, something that has never been seen since the Sacco was created in the 1970s, ‘’we have never experienced this before’’ one of them told us. “As we speak, normal operation at Afya Sacco is slowly grinding to a halt.

It is a crisis that has come about as a result of Ms Mogire’s arrogance, workers may halt operations any time from now to demand a hearing over their grossly abused rights as a matter of the last resort,” they declared. Ms Mogire and Kosgey have within a very short period, established themselves as the de-facto owners, managers, unimpeachable CMC directors and demigods at Afya Sacco.

They are the ones calling the shots from the Sacco’s banking halls to all levels of the giant organization with impunity crowned it up by a CEO who cannot make hard decisions because he has been rendered impotent through deliberate moves by the board not to confirm him in his position.

One of Afya Sacco’s CMC’s disgruntled members of the board of directors who declined to be named said: “It is out rightly wrong for the chair and board to attend meeting each day of the week here at Afya Centre, each taking home hundreds of thousands of shillings in seating allowances. Ms Mogire alone takes home Kshs. 4.5 million a month. The board seats here to discuss nothing beneficial to us, it’s just their insatiable greed for money when workers, who do the donkey work go home hungry, she said that the last time workers were awarded salary increments was in 2019.”
